learning in the land

FORT APACHE NATIONAL LANDMARK installation

One piece of feedback from our workshops with tribe members was the need for more shade on the site. We proposed creating circular areas (inspired by Apache knowledge) in the landscape that enable the gathering of small- to mid-size groups of up to 30-40 people. Available for any purpose, they could be configured in a way that enables storytelling, performance, making, and much more. From our discussions, it would make sense to have at least one of these facing in each of the cardinal directions. Correct orientation, places to sit and to conduct activities, plantings, and shade structures are all important considerations. Within the context of ensuring these are useful, the Foundation could explore a range of regular programming that could be developed in concert with other organizations and individuals who are holders of specific knowledge. Of special note is the possibility of using these spaces for programs of Apache language instruction. It becomes important to consider, in that regard, how and where best to situate these places so that students have maximal access to varied resources and activities that assist in learning Apache.
