CORAL INTERACTIVE & SILURIAN REEF DIAROMA

MILWAUKEE PUBLIC MUSEUM

This section is part of the Time Travel exhibit located on the third floor of the museum. The Paleozoic Era exhibit highlights geological evidence of early life on Earth, examining the distinct differences in planetary conditions compared to the present day while uncovering unexpected connections to modern life. The exhibit aims to spark curiosity about early Earth’s life forms, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the environmental conditions that supported the evolving life of the Paleozoic Era. It raises key questions, such as: Who dominated life during this era? When and how did these life forms emerge? What behaviors did they exhibit, and what traces did they leave behind? The Silurian reef exhibit, in particular, provides an in-depth exploration of the diversification of marine life during this period.

The original

MPM’s current Silurian Reef diorama dates back over 30 years and it’s research effort is a collaboration with the Field Museum in Chicago.

The Task

The task was to redesign the experience to promote deeper sense of wonder and exploration for visitors.

The Coral Reef Interactive then developed into a peninsula that extrudes from behind the protective glass creating a seamless experience from a design perspective

This experience is currently in the contact administration phase as we work with fabricators to bring it to life along with the rest of the new
